Jonathan, Nancy and Steve got together at the end of season 1. When the Byers moved away, Steve and Nancy missed Jonathan terribly but they kept in contact as much as possible.
When the Byers return to Hawkins in season 4 Jonathan, Nancy and Steve are all over each other.
Eddie (who doesn't die) feels jealous and left out (though he tries not to feel that way. But Steve and Nancy have been great to him during this whole Vecna thing and Eddie can't help it that he grew attached to them so quickly.)
Steve and Nancy catch on that something is bothering Eddie when he starts distancing himself from them and come to find out what the problem is. So they decide to talk with Jonathan about bringing Eddie into their relationship.
*Bonus if Jonathan is slightly reluctant at first (remembering hearing Eddie was a troublemaker in school) but Nancy and Steve manage to to bring him around after telling him what a good guy Eddie really is and after having talking Jonathan into spending some time with him.
