I've seen a lot of time-travelling Steve fics, but Steve is always put back into his younger body in those. But why not two Steves?
In a Terminator-esque plotline, a version of Steve from a post-apocalyptic timeline where Vecna has won is sent back in time - what period of time he's sent back to is up to the author, but preferably no earlier than just before the start of the show, any time up until S4 works (genuinely I can see this working during any season). He's there to try to save them all from dying but also, in the future, Steve is very aware that he is bisexual and is/was (up to author whether Eddie is alive in Future!Steve's time) in a relationship with Eddie. This leads to much confusion for Eddie and both versions of Steve, not to mention sexual tension.
Basically, Future!Steve ends up having a threesome with past!Eddie and past!Steve, the plot is really just an excuse for that.
