Steve saved Eddie’s life in the UD and afterwards, he and Eddie got together.
Eddie’s name was cleared, and while it’s the 80s and they obviously have to be careful in general, all of their friends and Wayne know about their relationship and are happy for them and Eddie’s self-esteem is getting better now that he has this big extended family who accept him for who he is, despite still being pretty much the town pariah.
Then, something happens and Steve ends up hurting Eddie (nothing unforgivable like cheating or abuse, just a misunderstanding or something, but Steve is definitely at fault) and they break up.
Steve won’t talk about it with anyone (because he’s feeling guilty) and the rest of the gang makes the assumption that Eddie is to blame and end up automatically taking Steve’s side since they’ve known him longer.
Eddie ends up ostracized from everyone but Wayne and feeling like the ‘Freak’ again on top of the pain of the breakup.
Steve has no idea this is happening, but once it comes to a head (maybe they uninvite Eddie to a party or something), his protective instincts kick in and he lets the gang know they were wrong and it’s the kick in the butt he needs to start fixing his mess.

As far as S4 canon goes, I only care about Eddie being alive and Jason being dead, Max’s fate is 100% up for grabs.
Make up sex isn’t necessary, but if you want to include it, I wouldn’t complain. lol. Bottom!Eddie please.
